Dental sealants protect our children’s teeth.

40% OF KIDS WILL have at least one cavity(a permanent hole in a tooth) by the time they start school, usually due to poor oral hygiene and eating and drinking lots of sugary things. There is sugar in so much more than just sweet treats. Crackers, processed foods, and even drinking juices can cause these cavities. Drinking juice through a straw is a big culprit as it helps sugar get sucked into small spaces that is hard to get clean. It’s critical to teach kids good oral health habits early on and to help them brush their teeth until they are able to do it themselves, but it can still be tricky for them to clean out the crevices in their molars. That’s where the great tool of dental sealants come in.
Here is a video walking you through what dental sealants are and the benefit they provide for you and your children’s teeth. You can see it’s an easy process that provides a great barrier of protection and prevents dental issues and possible pain.

How Do Dental Sealants Work?

Dental sealants are a layer of clear plastic that we brush onto the chewing surfaces of teeth to keep cavity-causing plaque and bacteria out. This thin layer goes on the surfaces of your back teeth to protect them from harmful cavity-causing bacteria. Dental sealants reduce childhood tooth decay in the back teeth by as much as 80%, which is why they’ve been such a popular treatment since the 1960s. The application process is quick, painless, and easy and can be done within a regular appointment.

Who Can Get Dental Sealants?

We recommend that kids get dental sealants as soon as their first adult molars erupt, which is usually around age 6. The earlier, the better, but sealants aren’t only for young children; older kids, teens, and adults can get them too! This form of preventative maintenance can protect your teeth from costly dental procedures and save you quite a bit of money on future dental services.

Ask Us About Dental Sealants

Dental sealants are a remarkable preventive tool that can safeguard your or your child’s oral health for years to come. By providing a protective barrier against cavities, especially in those hard-to-reach areas of your molars and premolars, they offer a simple yet effective way to maintain a healthy smile. It’s an easy application that has such great benefits.
These protective coatings have been proven to work as much as 9 years after placement, but they can fall off the chewing surface of teeth. Data best shows that they provide 80% of protection against cavities for two years and 50% protection for a total of four years. They should be checked at regular dental appointments to ensure they are still intact and providing the protection you desire for your child. If a sealant falls off, the protective shield is gone making that tooth vulnerable to a cavity.
